The wonderful Western-style woodblock print "Bara" (Roses) is by Sotaro Yasui (1888-1955). Rarely seen offered for sale. Printed in Showa 9 nen (1934). Published by Kyuryudo. Publisher name on the lower left margin and edition number on the bottom margin. Roses are a very famous and popular subject of his artworks. This old print is extremely rare and desirable. The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo has a copy of this print.
Sotaro Yasui was one of the Japanese famous Western-style painters/artists. In the 1930s, Kyuryudo publisher released several woodblock prints by Sotaro Yasui. In 1936, Kiyoshi Saito was inspired by Yasui's woodblock prints, especially "Girl in New Year Clothes" and started making woodblock prints while being self-taught. Sotaro Yasui had a strong influence on Kiyoshi Saito who later became the worldwide famous artist.

Mount Ishizuchi is the highest mountain on the island of Shikoku and also the highest mountain west of Mount Haku. It is known as 'the roof of Shikoku' and the sharp, rocky summit resembles a huge stone hammer. Mount Ishizuchi is an important object of worship in this region and one of the major centers of Shugendō, a sect of a mixture of Shintoism and Buddhism.
