- Bansen-Nyushin (Arrival of Nanban Ship) -

The exotic woodblock print “Bansen-Nyushin” (Arrival of a Nanban Ship) is by Sumio Kawakami (1895–1972). “Bansen-Nyushin” refers to the arrival of a Nanban ship at port. On the right side of the print, a Nanban ship arrives laden with goods, while on the left a group of people welcomes the visitors, fascinated by Nanban culture. Kawakami used the term “Nanban” broadly, applying it to ships from various countries, including the Netherlands, rather than limiting it to Portugal and Spain.

This large-format print was printed from a single black block and then hand-colored. The Japanese title appears on a pink decorative plaque on the left, and the artist’s block signature, “Sumi,” is in the lower center of the image.

The work is filled with the exotic charm associated with the era when new foreign influences were first introduced to Japan.
