Exceptional woodblock print "Himawari"(Sunflower - Van Gogh) is by Gihachiro Okuyama (1907-1981). Very powerful and beautiful art piece. The original artist's name "Van Gogh", the title "Himawari", Numbered "91-67", Pencil-signed "Gihachiro Okuyama", and dated "1960" on the bottom margin. Dated "Showa 35 nen 7 gatsu 17 nichi" (1960, July 17th) and "Okuyama Gihachiro juzuri"(Printed by Gihachiro Okuyama), and small red seal "Hori, Gijin"(Carved by Gijin Okuyama) on the left margin. Gihachiro Okuyama produced wonderful woodblock print series of famous European paintings. This print is one of them. They are highly collectible prints and hard to find nowadays. The unique Western-style woodblock print "Miss Kobe" is by Hide Kawanishi (1894-1965). This print depicts a modern Kobe girl against Kobe port. Very bold and strong colors. This was later printed in 1979. (posthumous printing)

In addition, she produced a print collection "Paris" with very famous photographer Kishin Shinoyama and writer Jun Ishikawa. She passed away in 1995 in Tokyo, Japan. She was 58 years old.

Wonderful woodblock print "Ginza no hatsu hinode" (Morning of New Year's Day in Ginza) is by Toshi Yoshida. It shows the dawn at Ginza on New Year's Day in the 50's. Very retro-chic print with retro cars and modern buildings. This print is very unique. First printed in 1958. This is a later edition. According to the publisher, this print was printed about 20 years ago. Japanese title ”銀座の初日の出”' on the bottom margin was handwritten by Toshi's wife at that time. Block-signed "Toshi Yoshida" on the bottom margin. Later printing stamp "atozuri" and printer's stamp "Heihachi Komatsu" on verso as shown.

Lovely tree print "Haru no tsuki" (Sprint Moon) is by great Japanese artist Joichi Hoshi. Titled "Haru no tsuki" (Spring Moon), hand-signed "J. Hoshi" and dated '76 in pencil by the artist on the bottom margin. One of his popular "Trees" series. It is very hard to find his print in excellent condition like this. Very poetic print with a full moon and bare tree. This is one of my favorite Hoshi's print.

Masuo Ikeda (1934 -1997)
Masuo Ikeda (1934 - 1997) was born in 1934. Masuo Ikeda is well known as a Japanese painter, printmaker, illustrator, sculptor, ceramist, novelist, and film director. He started winning prize after prize in the 1960s: the Governor of Tokyo's Prize (1962), the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art Prize (1964). In 1961 he had established himself as a printmaker by winning the Grand Prize for Printmaking at the Tokyo International Biennale of Art, but it was in foreign parts that he achieved his greatest triumphs: in 1961 the Prix d'Excellence at the Young Artists' International Biennale in Paris; in 1965 the Grand Prix at the International Print-making Biennale in Ljubljana; in 1966, the First Prize at the International Engraving Biennale in Cracow, and first prizes at the Biennales of Vienna and Venice, where he was only the second Japanese to win in this category, after Munakata Shiko in 1956. He was the first Japanese to have a one-man show at the New York Museum of Modern Art (1965). He was always on the move and spent two years in New York (1965-66), then settled for a year in Berlin (1967). Ikeda was producing prints in his studio in New York from 1969, he returned to Japan in 1980 and was based there from then on, and extended his brilliant talent beyond printmaking. In 1977, he won the 77th Akutagawa Prize (the most prestigious literary award in Japan) for his novel, Offering in the Aegean, and directed the film adaptation of the same title in 1979. His vigorous artistic activity even extended to the production of ceramic works from around 1983 onward. The Ikeda Masuo Art Museum is located in Nagano, Japan. His works are in the collection of many public and private institutions; among which, His artwork held at Smithsonian American Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.

Very cute black and white print "Jones Beach, N.Y" is by Unichi Hiratsuka (1985-1997). Unichi Hiratsuka is well known as Master of Black and White. The bottom margin has the title "Jones Beach, N.Y" in Japanese-, hand-signed Un-ichi Hiratsuka, dated 1983, sheet number 33/88. Artist red seal on the left edge of the image. People are relaxing on the beach, it is very heartwarming and pleasant.
Unichi Hiratsuka is called "father of the Sosaku Hanga" and one of the very famous artists of 21st century Japanese art. He said “Printing in black on white is often considered the first step of technique, but it is actually the final point. The most beautiful range of color is black and white”
