Beautiful woodblock print "Kanten" (The Sky of a Drought) is by Katsuyuki Nishijima. Very bold and impressive print. This scene is a very famous Okinawa pottery store ("Tsuboya yaki") in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture. Please note this is small size print paper 6 inches x 8 inches. The focal point is the "Shisa" on the roof. Many people put a pair of Shisa (lion dog) on their rooftops. Shisa are wards believed to protect from various evils. (Kanten) means drought continues without rain for a long time.
Nishijima uses old words as a title, which people are not used to using in their daily lives recently. Sometimes I ask Nishijima directly. I think he wants to put Japanese spirits or cultures which have been forgotten into his artwork.
