The beautiful woodblock print “Yabase Kihan” (Returning Sails at Yabase), from Tokuriki’s rare and highly regarded series “Ōmi Hakkei” (Eight Views of Ōmi Province), is by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902–2000). This is a hand-signed, limited-edition print.
I believe Tokuriki’s Eight Views of Ōmi Province series is among his most beautiful works. In this print, he captures a serene sunset over Yabase Port with soft, mellow colors that feel peaceful and timeless. During the Edo period, Yabase was a well-known stop for pilgrims and travelers along the Tōkaidō Highway between Kyoto and Tokyo, and Tokuriki conveys that quiet sense of history and gentle beauty wonderfully.
The print is signed “T. Tokuriki” and numbered in pencil on the lower left. The Japanese title and the artist’s signature “Tomi,” with his red seal, appear in the upper right, while the right margin includes “Ōmi Hakkei” (series title), “Shohan” (First Edition), and “Hanmoto Matsukyu” (publisher’s name, Matsukyu). The lower right corner of the paper is watermarked “Tomi.”
Many Japanese artists have been inspired by this location, and Tokuriki’s version truly captures its calm spirit and poetic charm.
