- Ishiyama no Shūgetsu (Autumn Moon at Ishiyama) from the series “Eight Views of Ōmi Province"

The luminous woodblock print “Ishiyama no Shūgetsu” (Autumn Moon at Ishiyama), from the celebrated series “Ōmi Hakkei” (Eight Views of Ōmi Province), by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902–2000), is a hand-signed, limited-edition work of quiet refinement.

“Autumn Moon at Ishiyama,” one of the Eight Views of Ōmi, depicts the harvest moon rising above Tsukimitei Pavilion. Tradition holds that Emperor Emperor Go-Shirakawa once admired the moon from this very site, now known as Tsukimitei Pavilion, which commands a sweeping view over the Seta River and the southern basin of Lake Biwa. Suspended in the night sky, the radiant full moon and scattered stars form a striking yet harmonious contrast with the pavilion’s graceful silhouette.

Tokuriki masterfully evokes the serene and timeless atmosphere of this revered moon-viewing spot—an ideal setting where successive emperors are said to have contemplated the autumn moon. His interpretation captures not only the landscape’s beauty but also its enduring poetic spirit.

The print is signed “T. Tokuriki” and numbered in pencil at the lower left. The Japanese title and the artist’s signature “Tomi,” accompanied by his red seal, also appear at the lower left, while the right margin bears the series title “Ōmi Hakkei” and the designation “Shohan” (First Edition).
