- Oze (Oze Marshland), EX-LIBRIS, 2007 -

This wonderful small print, Oze (Oze Marshland), by Katsunori Hamanishi (b. 1949), was printed in 2007. The print depicts Oze Marshland, featuring its iconic wooden trail and skunk cabbage plants. Because the muddy wetlands are very difficult to walk on, wooden planks were laid across the marsh to form a walking path, creating a striking view.

It is an ex-libris (bookplate), a label used to identify a book’s owner, and such prints are highly sought after by collectors. Though very small in size, it clearly showcases Hamanishi’s refined work with gold accents. The artist’s signature appears in the bottom margin.

Katsunori Hamanishi was born in Hokkaido in 1949. He is internationally acclaimed as a mezzotint artist whose works depict representational scenes of Japan and Japanese cultural iconography. His works are held in many major museums worldwide, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
