- Shidare Zakura (Weeping Cherry), EX-LIBRIS, 2004 -

This amazing small print, Shidare Zakura (Weeping Cherry), by Katsunori Hamanishi (b. 1949), was printed in 2004. The print depicts a weeping cherry tree in full bloom under a full moon. It is an ex-libris (bookplate), a label used to identify a book’s owner, and such prints are highly sought after by collectors. Though very small in size, it clearly showcases Hamanishi’s refined work with gold accents. The artist’s signature appears in the bottom margin.

Katsunori Hamanishi was born in Hokkaido in 1949. He is internationally acclaimed as a mezzotint artist whose works depict representational scenes of Japan and Japanese cultural iconography. His works are held in many major museums worldwide, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
