The lovely woodblock print "Secchiku En-ō-zu" (Mandarin Ducks and Bamboo in Snow) reproduces a celebrated painting by Hoitsu Sakai (1761–1828), one of the foremost Nihonga painters of the Rinpa school. Hōitsu is especially renowned for reviving the artistic legacy of Ogata Kōrin and helping to restore the popularity of the Rinpa tradition during the Edo period.
Published by Tansei-sha in 1983, this finely printed edition faithfully captures the elegance and subtle beauty of Hōitsu's original composition. The print bears the artist's signature and two red seals in the lower left of the image. The left margin includes the publisher's seal, along with the names of the master printer, Kurazō Yoneda, and the master carver, Sadao Uetani. An original explanatory sheet in Japanese is included.
This graceful composition depicts a pair of Mandarin ducks resting peacefully beside bamboo in a quiet snow-covered landscape. The brilliant plumage of the male duck provides a vivid contrast to the soft whites of the snow and the muted earth tones of the bamboo, while delicate sprays of nandina berries add small touches of bright red throughout the scene. In Japanese art, Mandarin ducks traditionally symbolize marital harmony, fidelity, and lasting happiness, while bamboo represents resilience and steadfastness. Together, they create a serene composition that beautifully expresses peace, enduring love, and the quiet beauty of winter.
