This large and exquisite woodblock print, “Kaze” (Wind), is after the celebrated Japanese Nihonga painter Shunso Hishida (1874–1911). The original painting, created in 1906 shortly after Hishida returned from his travels abroad (America, England, Italy, and France), shows a profound influence from British landscape painting. It is renowned as an innovative work that blends Western painting techniques with traditional Japanese aesthetics.

In this composition, Hishida masterfully depicts the movement of wind without relying on outlines—rendering forms only through delicate modulations of color and ink. The willow leaves appear to sway in a strong gust, almost allowing the viewer to hear the wind. Several graceful egrets glide through a serene landscape, harmonizing beautifully with the surrounding trees and atmosphere. The result is an evocative and deeply poetic scene.

This edition was faithfully reproduced as a woodblock print by Tansei-sha during the Showa era. The right margin bears the publisher’s seal, along with the names of the printer, Mitsuo Hashizume, and the carver, Sadao Uetani. The print also includes the original explanatory sheet (in Japanese only).

Shunso Hishida was a highly influential artist of the late Meiji period. Four of his major works have been designated Important Cultural Properties. Although he passed away at just 36, his legacy endures through the many masterpieces he left behind.
