The serene woodblock print “Yukiyo” (Snowy Night) is by Kiyoshi Tanaka (b. 1947). This work captures the fantastical beauty of a snowy night in the countryside of northern Japan. The quiet landscape, seen between shoji doors, conveys a profound sense of peace and stillness.

This print was created using the finest techniques of Edo-period artisan ukiyo-e printmaking, based on Tanaka’s original stencil-printed design. With Tanaka participating as the artist, and in collaboration with a master carver and printer, the piece has been exquisitely finished.

The print is limited edition 26/120, with the edition number written in Japanese, along with Nakajo Kobo (studio name) on the right margin. It is hand-signed in pencil by the artist, with his red seal in the lower right corner of the image. This edition of 120 was issued in 1988. The carver was Shigeru Koike, and the printer was Kineo Nakajo (their names do not appear on the print).

Kiyoshi Tanaka, born in 1947 in Hyogo Prefecture, is a renowned Japanese katazome artist. Katazome is a traditional dyeing and printmaking method in which dye is applied through stencils to transfer intricate patterns onto fabric or paper. Tanaka’s works beautifully express the charm of nature and everyday life through this distinctive stencil-printing technique.
