The remarkable woodblock print “Kokyo no Haru, Hanzomon” (Spring Cherry Blossoms at Hanzomon Gate, Imperial Palace) by Fumio Kitaoka (1918–2007), printed in 1993, beautifully captures the fresh and serene atmosphere of spring at Hanzomon Gate of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
This large-format print portrays a warm spring scene, with delicate cherry blossoms in bloom and vibrant yellow rapeseed flowers in the foreground, set against the tranquil presence of Hanzomon Gate. The composition evokes a gentle and welcoming sense of the season.
Hanzomon Gate is the highest of the eight outer gates surrounding the Imperial Palace. During the Edo period, it served an important strategic role as a rear gate in the castle’s defense, protecting the area behind the main keep.
