'Okoso zukin' is a cold-weather headwear for women that was popular from the Edo to the Meiji period. It is printed on beautiful Japanese washi paper from the Showa era. The artist's signature (block-signed) and red seal are located in the upper right corner of the image, while the carver's and printer's names are embossed on the bottom margin. The delicate beauty depicted is wearing a purple hood and exudes elegance.
Koji Fukiya was born in Niigata Prefecture in 1898. His lovely depictions of beauties are delicate and lyrical, and they were very popular from the Taisho to the Showa periods. His woodblock prints are extremely rare, with only a few varieties available on the market

The exquisite print 'Tokonatsu' (Everlasting Summer) from 'The Tale of Genji' is by Kaoru Saito. "Tokonatsu" is one of the chapter titles of "The Tale of Genji," a classic Japanese novel consisting of fifty-four chapters. The chapter title is inspired by a waka poem in which Genji composed verses about the everlasting summer flowers (Nadeshiko). Genji compares the delicate and beautiful Tamakazura to the Nadeshiko flower. The pattern on the cloth she is sleeping on is also adorned with a Nadeshiko flower motif, adding to her allure. The contrast is striking, making it a truly elegant print.

The lovely woodblock print "Maihime" (Dancing Girl) is by Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934). From the popular series "Onna judai" (Ten Female Subjects). Limited edition size of only 280 sheets. The title, artist's signature, and artist's red seal are on the lower left corner of the image. Artist's name, the title, edition number 30/280 in Japanese Kanji, and the publisher's name "Takamizawa" on the left margin. This is a recarved edition by Takamizawa publisher in 1987. The woman's Kimono is a typical Taisho era design, which is very colorful and modern. It adds a very lovely and fresh mood to this print.
Yumeji Takehisa was born in Okayama in 1884. He is very famous for his Bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women), in addition, he succeeded as an illustrator for many books or advertisements. His typical lyrical works were called 'Yumeji-style beauties (Bijin). He is a representative painter of Taisho romance, and was sometimes called the "Ukiyo-e artist of the Taisho era''.

The fabulous silkscreen print "Kanashiki Kuchibue" (Sad Whistle) is by Tatsumi Shimura. (Some people call the title "Top Hat") Published by Hoshida Hanga Kobo in 1996. This girl is a legendary Japanese singer and actress "Hibari Misora" (1937-1989). This limited edition was published as a memorial print for the 50th year anniversary of her entertainment life. (In December 1945 she made her debut) Four different designs as one series. This is one of them.
These designs were created as special record covers for the 25th year anniversary of her entertainment life by Tatsumi Shimura in 1971. (Tatsumi Shimura was also a very popular illustrator).
The single record of "Kanashiki Kuchibue" (Sad whistle) was released in 1949. Hibari Mirora was 12 years old. Same time, she was in the main cast of the movie "Kanashiki Kuchibue", it was the first time for her to play the lead role in a film. She sang and danced "Kanashiki Kuchibue" in a black tailcoat and black silk hat. She was adorable and her record and movie were nation hits. She became very famous since then. Her legacy will live on forever.

The unique Western-style woodblock print "Miss Kobe" is by Hide Kawanishi (1894-1965). This print depicts a modern Kobe girl against Kobe port. Very bold and strong colors. This was later printed in 1979. (posthumous printing)
Hide Kawasnishi was born in Kobe. He never left his hometown. His modernist and exotic landscape of Kobe continues to fascinate people both inside and outside Japan. He is one of the pioneer artists of the Sosaku Hanga movement. (Taisho - Early Showa era)

This charming Bijin-ga woodblock print is by Hiroshige Ando. Wonderful details and beautifully embossed. The Japanese title is "Edo Murasaki Meisho Genji, Mitate Ukifune, Sumidagawa no Watashi" English translation is "Parody of the 'Ukifune"(Floating boat) chapter: Ferry on the Sumida River - From the series "Famous Places in Edo and Murasaki (Tale of Genji)". This print is a later printing in the Taisho era. The publisher is Koazuma Nishikie Hozonkai. Hiroshige Ando (1797 - 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes, such as the series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido", "The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido" and "One Hundred Famous View of Edo".

Breathtaking woodblock print "Nara no shika" (Deer at Nara) is by Shiro Kasamtsu (1898 - 1992). This is one of my favorite Kasamatsu prints. The publisher is Watanabe. It has a Watanabe "D"seal (1931-1941) on the lower-right margin. Title "Nara no shika" on the left margin. A beautiful girl with a bright-colored Kimono and adorable deer against the subtle background. The girl is feeding the Shika senbei (Cracker for the deer) to the deer. Really heartwarming and charming subject. This print is really hard to find.

First printed in 1886 (Meiji 19nen). Signed on the lower left of the image. This elegant re-carved edition is by Ukiyo-e Hanga Kankokai. Published by Nihon Bijutsuga kai. This reproduction set was sold only by the publisher in those days, not at dealers or bookstores. So it is really difficult to find nowadays. Copy right seal, Carver's name, Kenji Okura, Printer's name, Akio Watanabe on the verso. Selected great two carvers (Maeda and Okura) and two printers (Tanaka and Watanabe) worked on this project. Beautiful Bijin-ga woodblock print "KISERU" (Pipe) is by Tatsumi Shimura (1907-1980). Limited Edition 421 of 450. Limited edition size of 450 sheets. Carver name; Kentaro Maeda, Printer name; Ritsuzo Sato on the lower right margin. Yuyudo Publisher seal on the lower left margin. Large red seal "Tatsumi Kenin" in the lower margin reads, "Tatsumi seal of approval". Soft bokashi shading on the background. There is an interesting notation about this print in the book on Tatsumi's works. "The hand does not reach the itchy place. The pipe has done the hand substituting of the grandchild. It is not wise to do such a thing with the public..." However, probably this mature woman's gesture looked very cute and sexy in Tatsumi's eyes.

Shijo Noryo (Cooling off at Shijo) from Tsuki Hyakushi (One Hundred Aspects of the Moon)
Very beautiful woodblock print is by Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (1839-1892). "Shijo Noryo" (Cooling off at Shijo) from Tsuki Hyakushi (One Hundred Aspects of the Moon), this is re-carved edition from the Showa era. First printed Meiji 18 nen (1885). Signed on the left of the image. This elegant re-carved edition is by Ukiyo-e Hanga Kankokai. Published by Nihon Bijutsuga kai. This reproduction set was sold only by the publisher in those days, not at dealers or bookstores. So it is really difficult to find nowadays. Copy right seal, Carver's name, Kentaro Maeda, Printer's name, Sakuji Tanaka on the verso. Selected great two carvers (Maeda and Okura) and two printers (Tanaka and Watanabe) worked on this project. It is a really high-quality print. The carving and the printing is faithful to the original. Just stunning and beautiful. Please see the details.
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi(1839-1892) is very famous Ukiyo-e artist. In 1850, when he was 11 years old, Yoshitoshi was apprenticed to Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the great masters of the Japanese woodblock print. Yoshitoshi created modern ukiyo-e depicting warriors, actors, and Bijin.

This "Kuchibeni" (Rouge) is one of "Twelve Aspects of Woman". Originally published in 1929. This print is later edition by Aratama Kanko Kai (some people called Ishu Kanko Kai). Limited edition of 100 prints published. Printed on the beautiful Japanese Washi paper with "Sanso" watermarked. Kotondo's signature and seal in the image at the upper right. Carver name, Susumu Ito, the Printer name is Yoshiaki Watanabe and Torii red seal of approval (copyright) and publisher red moneybag seal on the lower left margin. Under the box, Limited edition published seal. Please see incredible Bokashi shading, overprinted hairlines, and beautiful Baren marks on the background. Beautifully embossing especially around her nose and Kimono. Very Japanese in every respect. Perfect Japanese Bijin-ga print.
