The beautiful woodblock print Tōji Zensei Bijin Zoroi, Chōjiya uchi Hinazuru (A Collection of Contemporary Popular Beauties: Hinazuru of the Chōjiya House) is by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806). It portrays Hinazuru, a famed courtesan of the Chōjiya House in the Yoshiwara district, with refined elegance and quiet poise. The print reflects Utamaro’s mastery of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, through its graceful linework, coloration, and sensitive attention to feminine beauty. Hinazuru is portrayed not simply as a fashionably dressed figure, but as an embodiment of the urban sophistication and idealized beauty admired in late eighteenth-century Edo.

Originally printed during the Edo period, this is a recarved edition from the late Shōwa era (1980–1990). The publisher is Yuyudo; however, this print is part of Utamaro’s ukiyo-e collection issued as “not for sale.” This woodblock print features high-quality colors and intricate details. The traditional round fan (uchiwa) she is holding is rendered with remarkable detail, from its delicate ribs to the finely depicted floral design, giving it an almost tangible quality.
