The tranquil woodblock print "Takasegawa" (Takase River, Kyoto) by Masao Ido (1945–2016) beautifully captures a serene summer scene along the historic Takase River in Kyoto. A traditional Takase-bune (flat-bottomed cargo boat) rests quietly on the calm water, evoking the gentle pace of life in old Kyoto. During the Edo period, these boats transported rice, sake, firewood, lumber, charcoal, and other goods between Fushimi and central Kyoto, serving as an important lifeline for the city's commerce.
Lush green willow trees, stone embankments, and traditional machiya townhouses create a harmonious composition filled with the quiet charm of Kyoto. The still water and soft summer colors convey a calming, relaxing atmosphere, making this print a wonderful example of Ido's ability to capture the timeless beauty and peaceful spirit of Kyoto. Printed on cream-colored paper.
