- Shinanoji Hojo (The Bounty of Shinano) -

The enchanting woodblock print "Shinanoji Hojo" (The Bounty of Shinano) is a magnificent work by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902–2000). This very large and captivating print depicts branches heavily laden with ripe apples in Shinano, the historic name for present-day Nagano Prefecture. Richly colored and beautifully composed, the design celebrates the abundance of the harvest season. A bird perched among the fruit-filled branches adds a charming sense of life and movement, while the vibrant red apples stand out brilliantly against the fresh green foliage. The overall composition conveys a feeling of richness, prosperity, and nature's bounty.

Shinano is one of Japan's most renowned apple-producing regions, and Tokuriki beautifully captures the area's agricultural abundance. I first encountered this print many years ago in a gallery and was immediately captivated by its vivid colors and striking design. Rarely encountered on the market, it remains one of the most memorable and attractive works by Tokuriki that I have seen.

The print is block-signed "Tomi" with the red seal "Toku" and numbered in the lower left corner of the image. The right margin includes the Japanese title, the date "Shōwa 55 nen Aki" (Autumn 1980), "Shohan Nihyaku no Uchi" (edition of 200), and the publisher's seal "Matsukyu-ban." It is also hand-signed "T. Tokuriki" in pencil in the lower right of the image. The watermark "Tomi" appears in the upper right and lower left corners of the margin.

Condition: Overall, in good condition with vibrant, well-preserved colors. A few minor spots and stains on the verso show through faintly to the top and bottom margins and, in a few areas, the background of the image. They are hardly noticeable to the casual observer and do not detract from the overall visual appeal of the print. Please refer to the photos for details.
