- Hana to Tori (Bird and Flowers), 1967 -

The simple yet charming print “Hana to Tori” (Flowers and Bird) is by Takeji Asano. This distinctive black-and-white composition depicts a large bird perched upon a branch at the center of the image, framed by surrounding blossoms. The simplified form of the bird, rendered in bold and clearly defined lines, reflects Asano’s highly individual design sensibility. Despite the strength and graphic clarity of the composition, the image conveys an unexpectedly warm and gently comical charm.

The Japanese title “花と鳥,” the artist’s hand-signed name “浅野竹二” in Japanese, the date 1967,” and the signature “T. Asano” appear in the lower margin. The number “149” (possibly the artist’s design number) is also noted in the lower right corner. The block signature “T.a.” appears in the lower right corner of the image.

Condition: Overall, very good condition for its age. There are minor paper creases and a few ink smudges/ink spots, as shown; these are characteristic of boldly crafted Sōsaku Hanga prints.
