-Shiki-Sansui (Autumn Leaves in the Landscape) -

This large and exquisite woodblock print, “Shiki-Sansui” (Autumn Leaves in the Landscape), is by Shunso Hishida (1874–1911), a celebrated Japanese Nihonga painter. The print depicts a serene autumn landscape with beautifully colored foliage—its striking and harmonious tones are truly captivating. This work was reproduced as a woodblock print by Tansei-sha. The right margin bears the publisher’s seal, as well as the names of the printer, Mitsuo Hashizume, and the carver, Sadao Uetani. It also comes with the original explanatory sheet (in Japanese only).

Hishida Shunso was a highly influential painter active during the late Meiji period. Four of his major works have been designated Important Cultural Properties, and despite his short life—he passed away at just 36—he created numerous masterpieces.
