This large, exquisite woodblock print "Shiki Kachō-zu" (Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons) is by Hoitsu Sakai (1761–1828), a celebrated Japanese Nihonga painter of the Rinpa school. A master of the Edo Rinpa tradition, following in the footsteps of Sotatsu and Korin, Hoitsu developed a refined, urbane style distinguished by elegance and grace. Originally painted during the Edo period as a folding screen, this work was reproduced as a woodblock print by Tansei-sha in 1983. The left margin bears the publisher’s seal, along with the printer’s name Kurazo Yoneda and the carver’s name Sadao Uetani. It is accompanied by the original explanatory sheet (in Japanese only).

This captivating print depicts vibrant seasonal flowers and a graceful white egret in full splendor. Sprinkles of gold and silver leaf enrich the composition, imparting a luminous elegance and a timeless sense of beauty.
