The very beautiful fukkoku woodblock print “Omoukoto Kagami no Utsushi-e, Koyori” (A Paper String, from the series Illustrations of the Mind as Reflected in Mirrors) is by Kunisada Utagawa. Ukiyo-e artist Kunisada Utagawa, who was active during the Edo period, created not only portraits of beautiful women and actors but also many works depicting scenes from the daily lives of ordinary people in Edo. He accurately depicted even the smallest details, such as kimono patterns and everyday objects, resulting in exceptionally refined and beautiful detail.
Originally printed during the Edo period, this work was later re-carved and reissued in the Shōwa period (1980s). The artist's signature, 'Gototei Kunisada-ga,' is on the left. The publisher is Yūyūdō. The publisher’s seals appear in the lower right and lower left margins. The carver, Shinnosuke Shibamura Maeda, and the printer, Tadao Endo, are also credited in the lower left margin.
*Koyori is a type of string made by twisting together thin strips of paper. It was traditionally used for binding booklets and tying long hair in earlier times. Since ancient times, it has been cherished in Japanese culture as a means of conveying feelings—for example, by tying wishes to Tanabata paper strips or using it as a decorative cord known as mizuhiki.
Technique: Woodblock
Print size: 10 and 7/8 inches by 15 and 3/4 inches (27.7 x 40 cm)
Condition: Very good condition
*The handmade paper may contain bark bits or other natural impurities.
