- Nobukata Sumo (Nobukata Sumo Festival, Ibaraki) -

The charming silkscreen print “Nobukata Sumo” (Nobukata Sumo Festival, Ibaraki) is by Masaaki Tanaka (b. 1947). This engaging work depicts local children participating in sumo wrestling as part of the long-standing Nobukata Sumo Festival. The festival is said to have originated over 300 years ago during the Edo period, when it was held to celebrate the peaceful resolution of a dispute over fishing grounds in the Itako City area and was dedicated to Kashima Yoshida Shrine.

The edition number, Japanese title, and the artist’s signature are hand-signed in the bottom margin. Executed in silkscreen, the print is distinguished by its rich color and lively visual presence. This is a limited edition of only 50 impressions.
