- Neko no Ukiyo-buro (Cat's Floating World Bath) -

The humorous woodblock print 'Neko no Ukiyo-buro' (Cat’s Floating World Bath), published by Isetatsu during the Shōwa era, is inspired by Ukiyo-buro, a comic novel written by Shikitei Sanba in the early 1800s. Ukiyo-buro is a satirical work depicting the daily lives of common people in a public bathhouse, focusing on witty conversations that incorporate storytelling techniques from rakugo, along with vivid descriptions of people’s gestures and interactions.

This print is especially unique in that human figures are transformed into cats and portrayed comically. The humor naturally brings a smile to the viewer’s face. The Japanese title appears in the upper right corner of the image. The publisher’s seal and copyright seal are located on the lower left margin, and the “Shohan-zuri” (first edition) seal appears on the right margin.
