- Matsuchiyama (Matsuchiyama, Asakusa) -

The Japanese woodblock print “Matsuchiyama” (Matsuchiyama, Asakusa) is by Shuncho Katsukawa (dates of birth and death unknown). Matsuchiyama, located northeast of Sensoji Temple on the west bank of the Sumida River, is a hill about 10 meters above sea level. Matsuchiyama Shoden, which has a temple complex here, is officially called Honryu-in and is one of the branch temples of Senso-ji Temple.

This print depicts three beauties enjoying a walk and chatting together. Stone towers and pillars engraved with waka poetry add elegance and atmosphere to the scene.

The design was originally created during the Edo period and was later issued as a recarved edition by the Adachi publisher in the Showa era. A high-quality woodblock print by a renowned publisher, it rewards close viewing with its beautiful details.

Shuncho Katsukawa was a pupil of Shunsho Katsukawa. He was one of Shunsho’s most outstanding pupils, but rather than painting actors, he is known for his elegant portraits of beautiful women, incorporating the style of Kiyonaga Torii, as well as for his excellent pillar paintings.
