The breathtaking large-format serigraph Gio-ji Temple in Autumn by Yukio Katsuda (b. 1941) beautifully captures the serene autumn scenery of Gio-ji Temple in Kyoto. I visited Gio-ji during the height of the foliage season and was completely breathless and speechless at its beauty.  Maple trees throughout the temple grounds glow in vibrant shades of red and orange, while a delicate carpet of fallen leaves resting on the moss creates a magical, almost otherworldly scene. The quiet beauty of this landscape brings a deep sense of peace and calm to the viewer.

Gio-ji Temple is an ancient temple located in Kyoto’s Ukyo Ward, closely associated with The Tale of the Heike. It is especially renowned for its moss garden and spectacular autumn foliage.

The edition number “34/35,” title “229,” the artist’s hand-signed signature “Y. Katsuda,” the date “’89,” and the artist’s red seal are all inscribed in pencil on the bottom margin.

*'Ryu-ga' is a unique technique the artist developed through years of dedicated study in pursuit of his own form of expression. Each work is created by meticulously layering paint through countless tiny holes in the block, building depth and texture with every application.

Technique: Serigraph (Silkscreen)
Paper size: 18 and 1/2 x 25 and 1/8 inches (47 cm x 64 cm)
Image size: 14 and 7/8 x 21 and 3/8 inches (38 x 54.3 cm)
Sheet number: 34/35

Signed: Hand-Signed on the bottom margin and signed "Katsu" in the lower right corner of the image.
Condition: Overall, in very good condition. The image itself is in excellent condition. Due to the inner edge of the mat being made of gold metal, a faint mat line remains, and there appears to be slight transfer of the gold color onto the surface. There are also a few pinhead-sized spots near this line. Please refer to the photographs for details. The price has been adjusted accordingly.
