This remarkable print, Shisen-do Niwa (Garden of Shisen-do Temple, Kyoto), captures the serene beauty of one of Kyoto’s most celebrated gardens. Bamboo and young bamboo shoots are depicted growing straight against a vivid green background, creating a striking and harmonious composition. The bold, vibrant colors characteristic of the artist make this an especially eye-catching piece.
Shisen-do Temple, located in Ichijoji, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, was originally the mountain villa where the Edo-period literary figure Ishikawa Jozan spent his final years. It is now a branch temple of Eihei-ji Temple, the head temple of the Soto sect of Buddhism. Its gardens are renowned for their elegance throughout all four seasons.
The artist’s red seal, “Hashi,” from Hashimoto, appears in the lower left corner of the image. The edition number, “AP” (Artist’s Proof), the Japanese title, the artist’s signature, and the date " ’74” are handwritten in pencil by the artist along the bottom margin.
Technique: Woodblock
Paper size: 12 and 3/8 x 16 inches (31.5 x 40.4 cm)
Image size: 10 and 1/4 x 13 and 3/4 inches (26 x 35 cm)
Sheet number: A.P (Artist Proof)
Date: 1974
Signed: Hand-signed by the artist on the bottom margin.
Condition: Overall, it is in very good condition for its age. There are a few very minor spots on the margins; however, only a couple of faint spots on the left margin are slightly visible and will be covered when matted. The others are not noticeable to a casual observer and appear to be embedded in the paper, as handmade Japanese washi paper may contain bark fibers or natural impurities. A faint spot on the verso shows slightly through to the front (near the bottom edge of the image) but is hardly noticeable. Please refer to the pictures.
