The superb woodblock print 'Rokujûyoshû Meisho Zue: Tsushima Tennō Matsuri' (Owari Province: Tsushima, Tennō Festival), from the celebrated series Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces, is by Hiroshige Utagawa (1797–1858).
Originally published in 1853, this impression is a re-carved edition from the Shōwa era, presented in a smaller format. It features rich, high-quality colors and finely rendered details, reflecting the enduring artistry of traditional woodblock printing.
The composition portrays the Owari Tsushima Tennō Festival—still held each summer in present-day Tsushima City, Aichi Prefecture—and counted among Japan’s three great river festivals. The celebration unfolds in two parts: the “Evening Festival,” where lantern-lit makiwara-bune (festival boats) glow against the night sky, and the “Morning Festival,” held at dawn the following day. This print captures the luminous beauty of the Evening Festival.
With a masterful sense of atmosphere, Hiroshige elevates the scene into a vision of quiet grandeur, presenting one of the Owari region’s most renowned festivals as both a poetic and spectacular celebration. Please take a moment to appreciate the superb craftsmanship and the remarkable intricacy of its details.
