This is a scene of Torinoichi or Cock Fair of Otori Shrine in Asakusa Paddy Field. The festival is held on the "Cock Days" in November. A Cock Day comes around every twelve days on the lunar calendar. The superstitious say there are frequent fires in a year which has three "Cock fairs". The fair is featured by the sale of bamboo rakes symbolic of good luck decorated with trinkets at the roadside stalls around the shrine. The festival attracted a large crowd of people, particularly merchants.
In the print is seen a long column of worshippers carrying lucky rakes on the footpath between the rice fields against a background of Mt. Fuji in the evening twilight. A cat is peeking outside through a latticed window of a resting house for harlots. Around here there were a number of such dormitories where they were allowed to rest or recuperate. Under what stars was the girl in this room made to sell her favors? Could the rake-shaped hairpin by her bedside bring her good fortune? Hiroshige seldom treated such a pathetic scene as he did in this print.

The print is fine both in composition and printing. But a discerning eye will notice misprinting in the part under the arched bridge. Experts say deep blue, that is, the same color to paint Shinji Pond, is not fitting here. The misprinting is corrected in later runs. Thus you can easily tell whether a print of this scene is from the first edition or not.
The shrine enjoyed the special patronage of the Tokugawa Government. The shrine buildings, pond and the gate were all patterned after those of its head shrine at Dazaifu in Fukuoka in the southern main island of Kyushu. The shrine precinct has also been famous for the wisterias which bloom in May and embellish the pond.

This is a snow scene of the main gate and the five-storied pagoda of the famed Sensoji Temple seen from Kaminarimon Gate in Asakusa. It is one of the masterpieces in this set. The temple building and the pagoda in red and green set off the snow scenery. The blank printing of the snow intensified the sense of snow depth. Hiroshige depicted in another print the temple and a row of visitors carrying umbrellas in the snow in the compound.
The temple commonly called the Kannon Temple of Asakusa is dedicated to Kannon or the Goddess of Mercy.
Records say the temple was first built in 628 by three government officials who found a tiny Kannon image about 5.5 centimeters in height in their nets while fishing in the Sumida River. The building was reduced to ashes times in 1378, 1535, 1631.... and 1945, and reconstructed in 1958. Kaminarimon Gate and the main temple gate were rebuilt in 1960 and 1964, respectively.

In 1842 Mizuno Echizen no kami, the chief minister of the Tokugawa Government, proclaimed the Tempo Reform and clamped tight controls on social customs and behavior. Pornographic pictures were banned and theaters were also affected. Ichimuraza, Nakamuraza and Moritaza theaters, together with actors and others connected with the theaters, were moved to an out-of-the-way place between the Sensoji Temple and Yoshiwara. The new site of Saruwaka was named after the founder of Kabuki play. Ironically the new theater quarters drew more people than ever before.
In the left is a tea-house where theater-goers dined and made reservations for shows. In the right are theaters-Moritaza in the foreground, Ichimuraza next and Nakamuraza the farthest. Thin cloud shading in the lower part of the moon is a 'random' addition by the printer. A similar shading is seen in Komakata Temple by Azumabashi Bridge. The form or location of such insertions out of the printer's freak are various. The shading is omitted in later prints.

The one hundred thousand "坪" tsubo (about 80 acres) Land is today Ishijima, Senda and Umibe, Sengoku in Koto Ward sandwiched in between the Simida and Ara River and facing Edo Bay in the south. The area and its adjoining Sunamura-Shinden and Hachiemon- Shinden were the low-lying marsh overgrown with reeds.
Hiroshige painted the snow-covered bleak trackless moor spreading under a wild eagle soaring in the sky. He must have borrowed the sharp eyes and powerful wings of the bird to depict the desolation of the wasteland. Mt. Tsukuba is drawn yonder. Lacquer is used in the beak in the first edition.

The picture shows two fine views of Edo in Hiroshige's times Mt. Fuji as seen from the hilly Surugacho and Echigoya Draper Shop at Surugacho. These two were the favorite subjects of Hokusai. Hiroshige and other ukiyo-e painters.
The picture of Mt. Fuji towering above the clouds painted in bluish purple, yellow, dark blue, light crimson colors is splendid indeed if a little too decorative.
Echigoya started a business here in 1683 and immediately won general popularity in Edo. It's motto "cash payment and reasonable prices" appealed to the people. Credit sale payable only twice a year in July and December was the common practice at the time.
