This original very large-format Japanese woodblock print by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902–2000), titled Snow at Meiji-Era Western Building, Morioka, is from the Iwate Landmarks series, Nanbu Snow, Moon and Flowers.
This striking winter scene depicts a historic Meiji-era Western-style building in Morioka, Iwate, as snow falls gently across the scene. The vivid red brick and granite architecture stands out beautifully against the wintry surroundings, while the small figures and solitary umbrella add a subtle human presence to the scene.
The building, now known as the Bank of Iwate Red Brick Building, was designed by Kingo Tatsuno and Manji Kasai. Its distinctive red-brick Western architecture recalls Tokyo Station, which was also designed under Tatsuno's direction. Completed before Tokyo Station, the building remains one of Morioka's most recognizable examples of Meiji-era Western architecture. Tokuriki's bold depiction of falling snow, rendered in grey, light blue, and white, gives the scene a remarkable sense of depth and winter atmosphere.
Issued as part of Tokuriki's Iwate landmark series, the print is dated January 1980. The Japanese title appears in the upper right corner of the image, while the artist's signature "Tomi" and red seal appear in the lower left. The limited-edition number, the artist's hand-signed "T. Tokuriki," and the date 1980 are written in pencil along the bottom margin. The Japanese series title Iwate Meisho and the date Shōwa 55 nen 1 gatsu (January 1980) appear in the right margin. A "Tomi" watermark is visible in the upper left corner.
