The rare woodblock print Yugaeri (After the Bath) is by Koshiro Onchi, from the series Nihon Onna Zoku Sen (Women’s Customs of Japan). It was designed and carved by the artist, printed by the Takamizawa Publisher, and published by Fugaku Honsha in 1946.
This print portrays a calm, graceful woman emerging from a public bath. The noren curtain bears the name of the bathhouse — “Haru no Yu” (Spring Bath) — perhaps suggesting the freshness of the season. The soft pink accents on the curtain, the sash around her yukata robe, and the pink bathing accessories in her tub add a gentle charm to her cool elegance. Onchi beautifully captures the quiet, intimate moment of a woman just stepping out of a soothing bath. Takamizawa publisher seal on the verso.
