Yakushi-ji Temple, located in the heart of Nara, is the head temple of the Hosso sect of Buddhism. Founded in 680 by Emperor Tenmu as a prayer for the recovery of his consort, Empress Uno Sarara (later Empress Jito), it has long stood as a symbol of devotion and resilience. In 1998, Yakushi-ji was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.” Today, it continues to house many revered national treasures, carrying forward its profound cultural and spiritual legacy.
