- Uchiwa wo Motsu Ohisa ( O-Hisa Holding a Round Fan)-

The elegant woodblock print Uchiwa wo Motsu O-Hisa (O-Hisa Holding a Round Fan) is after the original design by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806). It portrays O-Hisa, a celebrated teahouse beauty of the Edo period, gracefully holding a round fan. Her richly patterned kimono, elaborate hairstyle, and poised expression are rendered with delicate detail. The soft cream-toned mica background has a subtle shimmer, lending the composition a refined and luminous atmosphere.

Utamaro is especially admired for his graceful lines, delicate color harmonies, and sensitive portrayals of feminine beauty. In this composition, O-Hisa’s distinctive expression and elegant pose convey both beauty and individual character.

Originally designed during the Edo period, this is a recarved edition from the late Shōwa era (approximately 1980–1990), published by Yuyudo. This impression was issued as part of Yuyudo’s Utamaro ukiyo-e collection and was designated “not for sale.” The fine color printing, shimmering mica background, and carefully rendered details reflect the skill and craftsmanship of traditional Japanese woodblock printing.
