The small woodblock print “The Great Bronze Bell at Daibutsu-den Temple, Kyoto” is by Tobei Kamei (1901–1977). The composition depicts people watching a monumental bronze bell. Built in 1614, the massive bell tower at Hokoji Temple in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, is one of the three largest bell towers in Japan. The bell measures 3.24 meters in height, 2.88 meters in diameter, and weighs approximately 63.75 tons. The artist’s signature and red seal appear on the left, while the Japanese title is printed on the right. The original card stock bears the English title.
The print is preserved and mounted on its original card stock, making it a wonderful collectible for admirers of Kyoto’s iconic places.
Kamei Tobei (1901–1977), whose real name was Eiichi, later changed his given name from Tobei to Genbei. He was born in Wakayama Prefecture in 1901. Tobei moved to Kyoto in 1919, studied under Kosai Yamada, and graduated from Kyoto Painting College in 1932. He exhibited his work at the Teiten and Shunyo-kai exhibitions, and is best known for his evocative landscapes of Kyoto.
