The beautiful woodblock print “Musume Hidokei, Uma no Koku” (The Hour of the Horse, from the series Sundial of Young Women) is by Kitagawa Utamaro. This celebrated series portrays the daily life of townswomen at various hours of the day, with the Hour of the Horse corresponding to around noon.

The composition depicts two young women fresh from the bath, each holding a tenugui (hand towel). The woman on the right gently clenches between her teeth a small rice-bran pouch—an essential beauty aid traditionally used as a body cleanser to maintain soft, beautiful skin. Utamaro’s subtle omission of contour lines from the women’s faces reveals his experimentation with a softer and more naturalistic mode of expression, lending the figures an elegant sense of realism and refinement.

Originally issued during the Edo period, this is a recarved late Shōwa edition (circa 1980–1990) published by Yuyudo as part of a special “not for sale” Utamaro's ukiyo-e collection. Rich color, intricate detail, and delicate embossing beautifully showcase the superb craftsmanship of these Yuyudo editions.
