The beautiful woodblock print “Musume Hidokei, Mi no Koku” (The Hour of the Snake, from the series Sundial of Young Women) is by Kitagawa Utamaro. This celebrated series depicts the daily life of townswomen at different hours of the day, with “Mi no Koku” corresponding to approximately 10:00 a.m.

The composition portrays the daughter of a merchant family accompanied by a mature female hairdresser. After having her hair arranged, the young woman gazes into a mirror while lightly touching her coiffure with evident satisfaction. The print beautifully demonstrates Utamaro’s remarkable mastery in capturing the subtle psychology and elegance of women.

Originally issued during the Edo period, this is a recarved late Shōwa edition (circa 1980–1990) published by Yuyudo as part of a special “not for sale” Utamaro's ukiyo-e collection. Rich color, intricate detail, and delicate embossing beautifully showcase the superb craftsmanship of these Yuyudo editions.
