- Mono no Kehai, 73 (Something Present) -

This humorous woodblock print, 'Mono no Kehai, 73' (“Something Present”), is by Umetaro Azechi (1902–1999). It playfully captures the uncanny feeling of sensing a presence in the mountains at night. Having spent time in the mountains myself, I can relate to this scene very well—hearing a sudden sound in the darkness, feeling a brief moment of tension or fear, only to discover it was just a small animal. This print brings those memories back vividly. It is a wonderfully unique and expressive piece.

Hand-signed “U. AZECHI,” marked A.P. (Artist’s Proof), dated ’75, and titled “Mono no Kehai – 73” in pencil on the bottom margin.

Condition: Overall, excellent condition. There is a slight ink smudge on the upper right margin edge and a faint scuff on the lower right margin, both of which will be easily matted out. His prints in such good condition are hard to find.
