- Minami-eki Ha-jirushi (Woman Relaxing after Her Bath)-

The elegant woodblock print Minami-eki Ha-jirushi (Woman Relaxing after Her Bath) is based on an original design by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806). It portrays a woman quietly resting after her bath, gently pressing a cloth to her face. Her relaxed pose and loosely draped yukata are beautifully set against a soothing pale blue background.

Other Utamaro prints based on the same concept are known with identifiers such as Ha-jirushi, To-jirushi, and Ta-jirushi. It has been suggested that “Ha,” “To,” and “Ta” represent the first characters of the names of the women portrayed. Minami-eki, meaning “Southern Station,” is believed to refer to Shinagawa in Tokyo. Although people of Utamaro’s time may have recognized this woman, her identity is now unknown, adding an intriguing sense of mystery to the work.

Originally designed during the Edo period, this is a recarved edition from the late Shōwa era (approximately 1980–1990), published by Yuyudo. This impression was issued as part of Yuyudo’s Utamaro ukiyo-e collection and designated “not for sale.” The fine color printing and carefully rendered details reflect the skill and craftsmanship of traditional Japanese woodblock printing.
