The exquisite woodblock print “Ise-Ebi” (Japanese Lobster) by Mokurei Nakagawa (1919–1979) is a beautifully executed large-format work. It depicts a Japanese lobster set against richly textured woodgrains with a subtle shimmer. In Japan, Japanese lobsters are considered lucky charms, and the tradition of using them as New Year’s decorations continues today. The dynamic composition makes this a truly eye-catching piece.
Mokurei Nakagawa was born in Mamurogawa Town, Yamagata Prefecture in 1919. He inherited Japan's unique printmaking techniques and was active in reprinting works such as Hiroshige's "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" and the National Treasure "The Tale of Genji Illustrated Scroll."
In 1955, Nakagawa was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property for Traditional Japanese Printmaking Techniques (woodblock carving) and passed away in 1979 at the age of 59. He left behind several masterpieces, but because he passed away at the young age of 59, his works are extremely valuable, making them difficult to find.
