The serene woodblock print "Ginkaku-ji Yuki" (Snow at the Silver Pavilion) by Takeji Asano (1900–1999) is from the celebrated series Snow, Moon and Flowers of the Famous Temples in Kyoto. This peaceful composition beautifully depicts the Silver Pavilion (Ginkaku-ji) blanketed in fresh snow. The quiet winter landscape, elegant temple architecture, and a single snow-covered tree create a harmonious composition that perfectly captures the tranquil beauty of Kyoto in winter.
The left margin bears the date Shōwa 16 nen 1 gatsu, (January 1941) and the series title Kyōraku Meisatsu Setsugekka no Uchi (Snow, Moon and Flowers of the Famous Temples in Kyoto). The title "Ginkaku-ji Yuki" (Snow at the Silver Pavilion) appears in the bottom margin. The lower right margin is inscribed "Takeji suri" (printed by Takeji), while the lower left margin bears "Takeji ga koku" (designed and carved by Takeji), reflecting the artist's direct involvement in every stage of the printmaking process.
Originally built in the late 15th century by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa as his retirement villa, Ginkaku-ji later became a Zen temple. Officially named Jishō-ji, it is renowned for its refined wabi-sabi aesthetic, celebrating simplicity, restraint, and the beauty of imperfection. Although it was never covered in silver, the temple's name is said to evoke the luminous appearance of the building beneath the moonlight. Today, Ginkaku-ji is one of Kyoto's most beloved landmarks and is recognized as part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
