The striking woodblock print “Daisen-in Sekitei” (The Rock Garden at Daisen-in, Kyoto) is by Taizō Minagawa (1917–2005). Characteristic of Minagawa’s background as a dyeing artist, the work features rich colors and a bold, decorative design, beautifully capturing the celebrated rock garden of Daisen-in in Kyoto. Although no actual water flows through the rock garden, part of the composition includes a stone arrangement symbolizing a waterfall. Within its bold composition, the scene seems to suggest water after a rainfall, with splashing water and waterfall spray lending the image a remarkable sense of dynamism and power.
The rock garden at Daisen-in is renowned for its ability to express vast natural landscapes and profound spiritual themes within a remarkably compact space. Using only stones and white sand, it creates a landscape-like composition of remarkable depth and beauty.
Minagawa’s work is instantly recognizable for its dynamic compositions, vibrant colors, and bold decorative sensibility, all of which are beautifully showcased in this captivating print. The left margin includes the Japanese title “Daisen-in Sekitei,” along with the inscription “Minagawa Taizō saku” (created by Minagawa Taizō), the publisher Unsōdō, the carver Monju, and the printer Takenaka. The publisher’s watermark appears in the lower left margin.
