Hitoshi Kiyohara

4281

This heartwarming woodblock print, "Children and Summer Festival" is by Hitoshi Kiyohara (1896-1956). Printed in  Showa 30 nen (1955). This print shows the Japanese game "Kingyo - Sukui" in summer. "Kingyo - Sukui" (Goldfish scooping) is a traditional Japanese game in which a player scoops goldfish with a special scooper with very thin Japanese washi paper. It is easy to break when it gets wet. It is a very hard game. Japanese summer festivals commonly have a stall for this activity. Both children and adults enjoy the game. This game started in the late Edo period, around 1810. Today it is so popular that stalls can be found at many "summer festivals" in Japan.
