The remarkable print “Sekkei, Daitoku-ji” (Stone Path, Daitoku-ji Temple) is by Kihei Sasajima (1906–1993). This work depicts the stone path at Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto, a temple renowned for its rock gardens, particularly its dry landscape gardens. Printed on green washi paper reminiscent of green tea, it is an intriguing piece that beautifully complements the serene scenery of Kyoto’s temples.
The print features a distinctive texture with heavy embossing created using the takuzuri technique. This method involves misting the paper to add moisture and forcefully pressing it against raised surfaces to transfer the design. Sasajima’s takuzuri prints are especially powerful, showcasing his unique approach to relief printing.
Kihei Sasajima was born in 1906 in Tochigi Prefecture. His work was influenced by his teachers Shikō Munakata and Un’ichi Hiratsuka. He devoted his life to creating black-and-white woodblock prints using the takuzuri technique, and his works are collected worldwide.
