Title "Iseshima Kokuritsu Koen" (Iseshima National Park), Artist's name "Nishiyama Hideo saku" and dated "Showa 35 nen" (1960) in Japanese on the right margin. "Gei" watermark on the upper left margin corner. Very different and unique style woodblock print. Hard to find these old original first edition prints nowadays.
Hideo Nishiyama (1911 - 1989) was born in Kyoto. He was a well-known (Nihon-ga) Japanese painting artist in Japan. Unsodo published "The Woodblock Prints -National Parks Series" by Hideo Nishiyama and Kaii Higashiyama in 1960.
Ise-Shima National Park

The inland area of the park boasts gentle mountain slopes and lush green forests that surround Ise Jingu, Japan's most important jinja (Shinto shrine) complex. Unlike most national parks, Ise-Shima has a relatively large proportion of private land, and significant populations in four cities: Ise City, Toba City, Shima City, and Minami-Ise Town. Masuo Ikeda (1934 -1997)
Masuo Ikeda (1934 - 1997) was born in 1934. Masuo Ikeda is well known as a Japanese painter, printmaker, illustrator, sculptor, ceramist, novelist, and film director. He started winning prize after prize in the 1960s: the Governor of Tokyo's Prize (1962), the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art Prize (1964). In 1961 he had established himself as a printmaker by winning the Grand Prize for Printmaking at the Tokyo International Biennale of Art, but it was in foreign parts that he achieved his greatest triumphs: in 1961 the Prix d'Excellence at the Young Artists' International Biennale in Paris; in 1965 the Grand Prix at the International Print-making Biennale in Ljubljana; in 1966, the First Prize at the International Engraving Biennale in Cracow, and first prizes at the Biennales of Vienna and Venice, where he was only the second Japanese to win in this category, after Munakata Shiko in 1956. He was the first Japanese to have a one-man show at the New York Museum of Modern Art (1965). He was always on the move and spent two years in New York (1965-66), then settled for a year in Berlin (1967). This beautiful print is by really cool Japanese contemporary artist Kozo Mio (1923-2000) He was born in Nagoya in 1923. The international contemporary artist (painter, printmaker, and illustrator ) who brought a new wave in a Japanese concreteness picture by a picture-like fantasy picture by the airbrush technique. His artwork is very familiar in Japan, his artwork was used as the cover of "Focus" (very famous Japanese magazine) until 1989 since 1956. studying traditional Japanese painting at the Kyoto Municipal School of Fine Arts, he turned to oils and, in the early part of his career, painted in a fairly straightforward descriptive style. Soon, however, he began to use the airbrush, concentrating on creating highly distorted figures and confirming his tendency to express his vision of modern society in psychological terms. Kozo Mio received the Grand Prix of the Biennial International Exhibition of Figurative Paintings.

In 1961 he had established himself as a printmaker by winning the Grand Prize for Printmaking at the Tokyo International Biennale of Art, but it was in foreign parts that he achieved his greatest triumphs: in 1961 the Prix d'Excellence at the Young Artists' International Biennale in Paris; in 1965 the Grand Prix at the International Print-making Biennale in Ljubljana; in 1966, the First Prize at the International Engraving Biennale in Cracow, and first prizes at the Biennales of Vienna and Venice, where he was only the second Japanese to win in this category, after Munakata Shiko in 1956. He was the first Japanese to have a one-man show at the New York Museum of Modern Art (1965). He was always on the move and spent two years in New York (1965-66), then settled for a year in Berlin (1967). Ikeda was producing prints in his studio in New York from 1969, he returned to Japan in 1980 and was based there from then on, and extended his brilliant talent beyond printmaking. In 1977, he won the 77th Akutagawa Prize (the most prestigious literary award in Japan) for his novel, Offering in the Aegean, and directed the film adaptation of the same title in 1979. His vigorous artistic activity even extended to the production of ceramic works from around 1983 onward. The Ikeda Masuo Art Museum is located in Nagano, Japan. His works are in the collection of many public and private institutions; among which, His artwork held at Smithsonian American Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.

A very modern woodblock print "Hair" (Kami) is by Takumi Shinagawa. Japanese title "Kami" (Hair) and his signature "Takumi Shinagawa" by hand in pencil on the bottom margin. Takumi Shinagawa was born in 1908 and he started to study with the very famous woodblock artist Koshiro Onchi. Shinagawa passed away in 2009. His abstract prints are very attractive and desirable. Already matted and ready to frame. This print is very hard to find. This print would fit well with mid-century modern decor.

Amazing lithograph print "SHADES OF HEIAN" is by Shuji Wako (1953 - ). This print is extremely large in size; 40 and 1/4 x 29 and 3/4 inches (102 x 75.5 cm). His artwork shows a classic Japanese motif as depicted in this print. Folded Origami crane and Temari (Japanese traditional ball) are placed on the beautifully draped Kimono fabric. This print is the perfect representation of Japanese beauty. The Heian period is regarded as one of the greatest periods of artistic and cultural development in Japan. Limited edition size is only 35 sheets.
Temari (手毬)
Temari is a toy which existed since the Edo period; in the beginning, it was made by merely winding threads around a ball, but since around the end of the 16th century, beautiful threads were geometrically wound around a spherical body, which was more elastic because of the zenmai cotton (cotton made of flowering fern) used.
