- Asian・Donguri to Aoi Sora (Asian・Acorn and the Blue Sky) -

The striking large-format vertical woodblock print “Asian・Donguri to Aoi Sora” (Asian: Acorn and the Blue Sky) by Mitsuru Hiraki (b. 1958), printed in 2024, belongs to his popular Asian Series. Rendered in a vivid and distinctive palette, the composition is immediately captivating. Set against this beautiful field, bird and floral motifs quietly emerge, lending the work an elegant rhythm and a refined Asian sensibility. There is a graceful balance between bold design and ornamentation, allowing the eye to wander and linger. The vertical format enhances its presence, giving the piece a quiet yet commanding stature. A powerful and visually engaging work, issued in a limited edition of only 30 impressions.

Mr. Hiraki shared the following about his creative process:

    “The colors in my work are vibrant and shining. The shapes I mainly use are seeds, fruits, flowers, hearts, etc., which have the power to sprout. My recent works are part of the Asian Series and incorporate dyed patterns (batik) from Southeast Asian fabrics as backgrounds. These traditional motifs—based on familiar flowers and butterflies—are full of the vitality of people living in Asia. I use them because I want to incorporate that energy into my work.”

Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1958, Hiraki received his Master of Fine Arts from Tama Art University in 1983. His works have been exhibited widely in Japan and internationally, yet rarely remain available on the market, making them distinctive and highly collectible.
