- Naruto Asairo (Dawn Colors at Naruto) -

The breathtaking woodblock print “Naruto Asairo” (Dawn Colors at Naruto) is by Koichi Okumura (1904–1974). This beautiful work depicts the famous whirlpools and seascape of Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture, illuminated by the soft colors of dawn. Rendered in subtle hues and a clean, sophisticated style, the print wonderfully captures the tranquil atmosphere and luminous beauty of the early morning sea. This print is seldom seen on the market. The right margin features the Japanese title and the publisher’s seal. The publisher’s watermark appears in the upper left margin corner.

Okumura was renowned for his masterful treatment of light and is often referred to as the “Painter of Light.” Many of his works portray forests, landscapes, and the gentle glow of dawn or dusk, all rendered in delicate color harmonies. A Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) artist based in Kyoto, he also designed woodblock prints for the publisher Unsodo and was highly regarded for his refined and poetic vision.

This print comes with its original folder and envelope. While both show spots, creases and tears as illustrated, they remain interesting accompaniments to the print and provide additional historical context. A brief introduction to Koichi Okumura is affixed to the folder, while the envelope bears the title, the artist’s signature and red seal, a label from a local broadcasting station, and the publisher’s information. Based on the accompanying materials, it appears that this print was distributed for commemorative or promotional purposes.

Condition: Overall, the print is in good condition for its age. There is slight age toning to the paper and a tiny spot on the bottom margin edge, both of which are minor. The spot will be covered when matted.
