The spectacular woodblock print “Suzakura Jinja no Jindai Zakura” (The Jindai Cherry Tree at Suzakura Shrine) by Masao Ido measures 25 1/2 x 17 5/8 inches (65 x 45 cm). This exceptionally large print features a phenomenal cherry tree in full bloom at Suzakura Shrine in Nagano Prefecture. This ancient tree, over 1,200 years old, is said to have grown from a staff placed by a god of nature, eventually becoming a giant tree with a root circumference of about 9 meters (30 feet). Designated as a National Natural Monument, the tree is truly a wonder to behold.

The print beautifully captures Japan’s natural beauty. A huge cherry tree stands against a blue sky, rendered with stunning colors and superb detail. Created using 28 blocks and 43 printings, this handmade woodblock print is a true work of art. The addition of gold and silver leaf adds a touch of elegance, making the print especially magnificent. Beneath the tree, a small torii gate and a stone statue reflect elements of traditional Japanese culture that have long been cherished by the Japanese people.
