The remarkable etching 'ROADSIDE Aki no Shigemi' (Autumn Bushes by the Roadside) is by Shogo Okamoto (1920–2001). This large-format print beautifully captures a roadside scene in which the autumn foliage of various trees blends together in rich harmony. Though these are the ordinary trees we encounter in everyday life, they appear to reveal their most vibrant colors just before winter quietly withers them away. The intricate detail of the print is so remarkable that it almost resembles a photograph. This impression is pencil-signed and titled by the artist.

Okamoto’s works are included in many major museum collections, including the National Museum of Art, Osaka; the British Museum; the Harvard Art Museums; the San Diego Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and numerous others around the world.

Technique: Mezzotint etching
Paper size: 21 and 3/4 inches x 17 and 1/4 inches (55.5 x 44 cm)
Image size: 17 and 1/2 inches x 12 and 3/4 inches (44.5 x 32 cm)
Sheet number: 112/120
Date: 1977
Signed: Artist hand-signed on the bottom margin
Condition: Overall in good condition, with excellent colors and fine details. There is slight toning and a visible mat line on the margins, as well as creases along the margin edges and a tiny, faint ink spot on the top margin (right side), as shown. These will be matted out when framed. Due to these condition issues, the price has been reduced accordingly. The image area remains superb.
