- Ishite-ji Temple II, Matsuyama, 1986 -

The striking, very large woodblock print Ishite-ji 2, Matsuyama by Kiyoshi Saito (1907–1997) depicts Ishite-ji Temple, one of Matsuyama’s historic Buddhist sites and an important stop on the Shikoku pilgrimage. A very large red lantern fills much of the composition beneath the temple gate. Pilgrims and a visitor in prayer add a quiet human presence to the monumental architecture. Saito’s simplified forms and restrained palette give the scene a calm, dignified character, while the lantern provides a vivid focal point.
