The Japanese woodblock print 'Momochidori Kyoka Awase' (Myriad Birds: A Kyoka Competition, Owl and Japanese Bullfinch) is by Utamaro Kitagawa (1753–1806). Originally printed in the Edo period (ca. 1790) as part of the Kyoka-book. Kyoka is a Japanese parody poem. This is a recarved edition by Yuyu-do, with the publisher's seal, carver's name 'Torazo Matsuda,' and printer's name 'Tadao Endo' on the right margin. It features wonderful details and a slight embossing, characteristic of high-quality woodblock prints by this famous publisher. Please take a moment to appreciate the beautiful details. This print wonderfully combines ukiyo-e with Japanese poetry.
