“Kyoto Folklore Toy – Wooden Black Cow from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine” by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902–2000) is a delightful small woodblock print, bursting with vibrant color and traditional charm. It features the Mantogyū (black cow)—a toy that is a replica of the “Black Cow within the Hall,” a figure traditionally housed inside a shrine structure.

A black wooden cow sits enthroned within a miniature hall, while its white pedestal is adorned with a red Umebachi (plum blossom) crest and is accompanied by a small wooden oil lamp dish. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, where numerous cow statues can be found, regards the cow as an important symbolic icon. Tokuriki’s signature, “To,” appears in the lower right of the image. The print is beautifully preserved and mounted on its original presentation paper—a wonderful collectible for admirers of Japanese culture and folk art.
