The elegant woodblock print “Haru Sugata” (Figure of Spring) is by Shinmei Kato (1910–1998). This refined work portrays a young maiko in spring, her gentle presence embodying the season’s freshness and grace. She wears a soft pink kimono set against blooming cherry blossoms, creating a harmonious balance of color and elegance.
The background is printed with shimmering silver mica, which is also delicately applied to her hair ornaments and kimono design, lending the composition a luminous, ethereal quality. This gorgeous bijin-ga woodblock print features spectacular colors, and the figure’s quiet beauty evokes the delicate charm of cherry blossoms themselves, filling the scene with a sense of serenity.
Published by Takamizawa, the title “Haru Sugata” appears in the upper left margin. The carver’s name, Shigeru Koike, and the printer’s name, Hiroshi Orihara, are printed in the lower left margin. “Hanken Shoyu – Kondo Koshiro” (Copyright – Koshiro Kondo) is noted in the lower right margin.
The edition number 61 appears on a label along the lower left edge of the verso, together with the artist’s hand-signed “Shinmei” and the publisher’s name. A red Takamizawa publisher seal and a Kondo seal are also present on the verso, along with a thin paper cover. A “Shinmei” watermark is visible in the upper left corner of the margin.
